    The second generation Mercedes-Benz SLK, internally designated model R171, is a two-passenger, front-engine, rear-drive, retractable hardtop roadster, unveiled at the 74th Geneva International Motor Show - and manufactured and marketed for model years 2004-2011. Currently in its third generation and manufactured at Mercedes' Bremen plant, the SLK nameplate designates Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light), and Kurz (compact).

    The R171 features a number of revisions compared to its predecessor, the R170: a 30mm longer wheelbase, increased length (72mm) and width (65mm), 40% increased use of high strength steel, seven-speed automatic transmission, adaptive two-stage airbags, head/thorax sidebags and a revised roof mechanism (marketed as the Vario roof) deployable in 22 seconds (previously 25 seconds) with a rotary-pivoting rear window enabling a more compact folded roof stack and trunk storage increased by 63 litres with the roof retracted. Optional features include remote operation of the retractable hardtop as well as an innovative forced air, neck-level heating system integral to the headrests, marketed as Airscarf.

    The fully galvanized bodywork, which features 19 percent improvement in static bending and 46 percent improvement in torsional strength with the roof down, also features a 3% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency, with a Cd value of 0.32. The design has been aerodynamically optimized to minimize interior draughts with the top retracted and includes a fabric windblocker which can be pulled up over the two roll-over bars. Mercedes marketed the R171's tapering front end styling by designer Steve Mattin as "Formula One-inspired".

    In 2008, the SLK reached sales of 500,000. The R171 made Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2005 and won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Convertible award.

    It was back down to supercar tuning house #Litchfield-Motors for me this month; it needed some professional photography of a brand-new, Guards red #Porsche-911-Carrera-4S-992 that it had been testing for the last few weeks on its dyno. The guys at Litchfield were confident they could make some impressive power gains out of the new 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged flat six engine following successful tweaks to the previous 991.2 3.0 engine. The turbocharged units in today’s modern era of #911 s are making Porsche more tunable than ever, and when it comes to tuning turbocharged cars, Litchfield certainly knows what it’s doing with its state-of the- art MAHA dyno cell. After just a few runs the team were able to safely increase the power from the respectable standard figure of 450ps to a whopping 580ps at the flywheel – I should point out that this is with just a remap tune and no additional modifications! There’s a plan to add more modifications soon, including an Akrapovic exhaust. Iain Litchfield talked about how it would seem the engines in the 992s are heavily detuned, with lots of exciting potential, and another interesting point is that it would appear that the standard 992 Carrera uses largely the same engine as the ’S’ models but detuned further still, meaning a standard 992 Carrera could potentially be tuned to similar figures that they have achieved with the 4S. I’m personally excited to see the results once they’ve got their hands on a base Carrera.

    With a long history of producing elite systems for BMWs, Akrapovic were particularly excited to work on the latest M5. With a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 600hp and 553lb ft of torque, it really has moved the game on, not least because it can be switched between 2WD and 4WD. Add to this an engaging chassis, plus subtly aggressive looks and it’s clear that this super-saloon is set to be a big hit with enthusiast drivers, which is where Akrapovic comes in. Following many months of intensive research and development, Akrapovic’s engineers have created a full Evolution Line titanium system that transforms the performance and sound of the M5’s twin-turbo V8.

    Like all Akrapovic systems, specialist 3D sound maps were used to ensure the sound was perfectly balanced – sporty and aggressive for enthusiastic driving, but with no drone when cruising. It’s this refinement that sets Akrapovic exhaust systems apart from the rest and the reason that they are so easy to live with. Beautifully finished in ultra-lightweight titanium, the Evolution Line titanium system can be specified with either matt or gloss finish carbon fibre exhaust tips. The system also offers significant performance gains of 11.5hp and 15.7lb ft and a weight saving of 9.4kg. As well as the Evolution Line titanium system and mandatory carbon fibre tailpipes (which must be ordered with the system), optional extras include an Akrapovic Sound Kit and a host of carbon fibre additions including a rear diffuser in either matt or gloss carbon fibre. A performance downpipe, without cats, will also be available to order in due course. This stunning titanium system for the M5 is now available for pre-order, directly through the Akrapovic dealer network.
