BMW Vision iNEXT previews 2021 SUV

BMW has shown off its Vision iNEXT concept at the LA Auto Show, previewing the brand’s future technological flagship. A production version is due to begin rolling off the line at its Dingolfing plant in 2021. An SUV with clear links with the BMW i3, Vision iNEXT previews BMW’s approach to autonomous mobility and the styling direction of its battery electric vehicles.

With no internal combustion engine, the iconic kidney grille is blanked off to improve aerodynamics and now serves as an “intelligence panel” to house the iNEXT’s myriad sensors. Slim headlights hint at the classic four-eyed lights characteristic of BMW models, while the blacked out C-pillar and rear window line evolves the radical styling of the smaller i3. A long wheelbase is said to offer lots of interior space, while a lack of B-pillars and rear-hinged back doors offers “supreme ease of access”.

The concept debuts a clear difference between the front and rear seating areas, with the latter designed to be a “snug and fashionably furnished ‘living space’ on wheels” according to BMW, while the driver sits behind digital display panels and a steering wheel in ‘Boost’ mode. Engage the autonomous ‘Ease’ mode and the steering wheel and accelerator pedal retract slightly to increase space and comfort while the iNEXT drives itself.
