MG has taken the wraps off its first all-electric car at the Guangzhou Motor Show. Based on the MG ZS SUV, the eZS will be a direct rival to the Hyundai Kona Electric when it goes on sale.
MG EZS BREAKS COVER
Exterior design changes are subtle, but the show car sports a light blue paint scheme and a set of two-tone black and silver alloy wheels with grooves cut into the spokes for a striking new look. Interior pictures show a power gauge for the electric motor in place of a tachometer, along with a new digital screen between the dials.
Full details of its powertrain haven’t been released yet, but sources predict one electric motor producing around 148bhp and sending power to the front wheels. This should provide brisk acceleration, and its battery pack is expected to be large enough for a driving range of just over 260 miles. It’s also likely that the eZS will offer a form of fast-charging, although it’s not yet known which charging networks it will be compatible with, or if the eZS will even be sold in the UK.
The eZS is expected to go on sale in the Chinese market – the home nation of MG owners SAIC – first, before the company looks at other countries. In China, the sales of electric vehicles have increased to make it the world’s biggest market. Over 700,000 were sold in 2017, and it’s likely that the one million barrier will be broken in 2018.
