'I bought it because I'm a self-confessed Porsche fanatic,’ says owner Rainer Becker. 'When I was about six or seven years old my father bought me the German equivalent of Scalextric for Christmas. The two cars that came with it were both Porsche 910s, a white one and a red one.

That was the first time I had ever seen such cars and I was immediately bitten by the bug. I've always liked classics because they are the cars with soul.

'Having done lots of track days in my 911, I was thinking about competing in historic racing when I happened across this 910 for sale.

I always commute on a scooter in town and happened to pass Gregor Fisken's showroom one evening and there it was. Everyone

said I must be mad to start racing with such an expensive car, but what made it the right car for me was its history and originality.

Most of the time I run mid- field but I once came fourth at Donington in the wet, because in those conditions handling was more important than power.

'Sometimes I just feel like taking the 910 out on the road to have some fun, the synchromesh gearbox is so good to use and perfect for road use.

The whole package is so good, it actually drives just like a road car and it always starts easily, so I'm not afraid to take it anywhere. People expect the suspension to be too uncompromising - of course it's at its best on smooth surfaces, but it's perfectly adequate for use on public roads.

'When I've arrived home after taking it out for a drive on the road, after switching engine off I find myself sitting in the car just smiling to myself.'
