Renault makes a Smart Island

Groupe Renault and electricity provider EEM Empresa de Electricitade da Madeira, SA (EEM) have formed a partnership to turn the Portuguese islands of Madeira and Porto Santo into a “smart electric ecosystem”. Electric vehicles, second-life batteries, smart charging and V2G will be used to boost the island’s energy independence and stimulate the production of renewable energy. The 18-month long project comprises three complementary phases: Firstly, 20 volunteer drivers in Porto Santo will use 14 ZOEs and six Kangoo Z.E.s as everyday vehicles.

Secondly, by the end of 2018, the vehicles will be used to buffer grid energy using V2G technology. Thirdly, secondlife batteries will be used to store and transmit renewable wind and solar energy produced on Porto Santo.
