Maybach to top new GLS range

Mercedes-Benz is planning to expand its luxury Maybach line with a range-topping version of the GLS – and the first prototypes are being tested on German roads. The third generation of Mercedes’ largest SUV is set to make its debut at this month’s Los Angeles motor show, but the Maybach version is likely to be shown at a later date.

The upmarket model is marked out by its unique vertical grille slats, chrome exterior detailing, distinct badging and unique wheels. The biggest changes will be to its interior, however, where the Maybach is likely to replace a seven-seat layout with five or even six captain’s chairs for a roomier and more luxurious layout.

It is expected to be powered by the AMG-developed twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, while a plug-in hybrid version is also under discussion. Tipped to be priced above £120,000 when sales begin next year, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is part of the sub-brand’s crucial expansion to compete with ultra-luxury versions of the Range Rover and the Bentley Bentayga.
