If the BMW X1 went on a diet and hit the gym, the BMW X2 is what you’d get. The 2021 X2 is basically the F48 X1’s sportier doppelganger, with lower ground clearance and a slightly chopped-off roof. However, the smaller size is well worth the sexier look and sportier driving experience that the small-size luxury crossover has to offer.
Initially put on sale in 2018, the BMW X2 with code F39 is one of the new breeds of the BMW X-series lineup. Since then, it has never outperformed the sales figure of the BMW X1, possibly due to the narrower market, mostly juveniles who seek a small and funky luxury SUV.
Unfortunately, there’s no significant update compared to last year. The trims stayed the same, though the M35i model gets a new M mesh grille design, and the Dynamic Handling Package is no longer available on the non-M models.
Exterior
It is almost like plastic surgery where it still has the F48 X1’s skeleton, but the flesh is entirely redesigned. The 2021 BMW X2 appears to be a masculine luxury crossover, replacing the X1’s posh characteristic with a sporty vibe. Dimension-wise, at 172.2 inches long, 71.8 inches wide, and 60.1 inches tall, it is more compact than the X1, or any of its rivals for that matter. It sits lower to the ground as well, at 7.0 inches ground clearance.
The front look is sharp and aggressive. Just like every other new generation BMWs, the large front kidney grille dominates the fascia, together with a dash-looking front bumper.
From the side, it looks very stylish and coupe-ish. It features large fenders with black accents surrounding the wheel arch, sporty dual-tone side skirts, a sloping roofline, and a significantly noticeable BMW emblem embossed on the C-pillar. Sadly, the standard 18-inch wheels look a little unproportionate with the large wheel arch. Hence, we recommend getting the 19/20-inch instead.
The back end of the crossover has an optional rear spoiler, functioning diffuser, and visible dual exhaust pipes. However, the cargo opening is not very wide, and the thick C-pillar and small back window generate blind spots.
Overall, the 2021 X2 adopts a fun and youthful design, despite some tradeoff in practicality and functionality.
Interior
Although the X2 might be BMW’s reason not to update the X1 so soon, it could have at least given it a different interior. Inside, the dashboard is the same as the X1’s. However, there is not much to complain about as it is still one of the most ergonomic and foolproof designs in any crossover. The built quality is solid as well, as we’d expect from a BMW.
The significant change is on the back, though, because things are tighter there. Due to the sloping roof, people over 6 feet may suffer from a lack of headroom. But the knee room is fine, though. In general, with a 93 cubic feet passenger space, it is on the smaller side for a crossover. Although it can still carry 4 people in decent comfort, the rear passengers would prefer the X1’s boxier design.
Meanwhile, the X2 is alright at 22 cubic feet in terms of cargo space, yet something like an Audi Q3 is more spacious. Despite the slightly smaller volume, the Volvo XC-40 also benefits from a larger opening. However, you can always fold down the rear seats flat if you need more space, and doing that is very handy thanks to the electronic seat release button on the side of the trunk.
Trims
In the U.S., the 2021 BMW X2 comes in three trims: sDrive28i, xDrive28i, and M35i. Fortunately, all models have a lot of power and torque on tap.
2021 BMW X2 sDrive28i
Starting MSRP = $36,600
Just like the 2021 BMW X1, the sDrive28i is the entry-level trim with FWD configuration.
Powertrain
Powering this athletic crossover is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged unit, producing 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Mated to it is an 8-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with Sport and Manual shift modes, channeling power to the front wheels. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 6.3 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph. Both are completely fine for a compact crossover.
Economy-wise, it is performing decently at 24 MPG/city and 32 MPG/highway. It also has a 16.1-gallon fuel capacity that should be good for 402 miles of range.
Exterior Features
As standard, the sDrive28i comes with 18-inch alloys and Satin Aluminum exterior trim. However, only two non-metallic color options available for free: Alpine White and Jet Black. The metallic pallets are available for an extra $550-$1,200.
Although LED foglamps are discontinued this year, the front still gets LED headlights with cornering lights and programmable LED Daytime Running Lights. Rain-sensing windshield wipers with automatic headlight control are also standard.
Meanwhile, the back gets a practical power tailgate and a rear-view camera to ease your reverse parking. BMW was also kind enough to install a moonroof as standard, although upgrading to a panoramic one is possible for an extra $1,350.
Interior Features
Inside is where its luxurious trait starts to show. For starters, you are getting SensaTec simulated leather upholstery (with Dakota Leather selections available at an extra $1,450), Anthracite headliner, and Black High Gloss trim with Pearl Chrome Accent. The steering wheel is leather-wrapped, and the front seats are 8-way power adjustable and have a memory function for the driver seat.
Furthermore, there is an 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment system with navigation, a 7-speaker sound system, and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity. Shame on BMW for still not making Android Auto available at the moment. Luckily, a USB audio connection and hands-free Bluetooth® audio streaming are available as standard.
Finally, there is dual-zone climate control, additional 12-volt power sockets, and privacy glass.
2021 BMW X2 xDrive28i
Starting MSRP = $38,600
For $2,000 more, you can get the xDrive28i, which adds AWD. There are no changes in exterior and interior features; however, the fuel economy is slightly worse at 31 MPG. Also, the grippier AWD system meant that it accelerates faster to 60 mph, taking just 6.3 seconds.
2021 BMW X2 M35i
Starting MSRP = $46,450
The M35i is the party piece of the 2021 X2, and it is probably the true reason to get the X2 over the X1. It is the top-of-the-range trim and the sportiest BMW crossover on the UKL2 platform. The M35i would also fight a head-to-head battle with the similarly-priced and performing Mercedes-AMG GLA 35.
Powertrain
The M division has tuned the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged unit to produce a thumping 301 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque. Paired to this engine is now an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission, complete with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and launch control. Together with the xDrive AWD system, the crossover catapults from 0-60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, although the top speed is still electronically limited to 130 mph. That is sports car territory.
The X2 M35i engine is also fitted with the upgraded M Sport suspension, M Sport steering, an M Sport differential for a much sportier driving feel. BMW also included upgraded M Sport brakes. Combined with the playful chassis, the M35i is definitely going to be fun on a twisty road.
Thanks to its compact engine, the claimed economy is not bad either. At 23 MPG/city and 30 MPG/highway, it is fairly economical. Moreover, with its 16.1-gallon fuel capacity, the M35i is a little mile-chewer as well, with a range of 418 miles.
Exterior Features
From the outside, it looks similar to the base model but with some M Sport design elements, such as 19-inch M wheels, an aerodynamic kit, a rear spoiler, and Shadowline exterior trims. The extended version of the Shadowline exterior trim is also available for an extra $300, featuring black colored kidney grille, mirror caps, and exhaust tips instead of the standard Cerium grey.
Unfortunately, only one non-metallic color is available as standard, the Alpine White, and the metallic color options also cost an extra $550-$1,200. To redeem this, at least the side mirrors are now power-folding and heated, and there is a hands-free power tailgate as well.
Weirdly, though, the standardized moonroof is removed on this highest trim, but the panoramic moonroof is still available as an extra.
Interior Features
On top of the features found in the s/xDrive28i, the M35i now has Aluminum Hexagon trim with Estoril Blue matte highlight. The front seats are also 12-way power-adjustable, and the rear-view mirror can now dim automatically to fight the dazzling lights from other vehicles. Lastly, it also has a nice multi-color and adjustable ambient lighting and a universal garage-door opener.
Safety and Driver Assistant
Just like the BMW X1, the standard safety features in the 2021 X2 are 8 airbags with an impact sensor that disengages the fuel pump, automatically unlocks the doors and turns on the hazard and interior lights in the event of crashing. BMW Assist eCall™ will also call emergency services for you if you are involved in a road accident.
Active Driving Assistant is also included as standard, featuring frontal collision warning, low-speed auto emergency braking, active blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and speed limit info.
Moreover, cruise control, hill descent control, and front and rear anti-roll (stabilizer) bars are standard.
Highlighted Packages
There are a few optional extra packages to further enhance the sportiness and luxury feel of the 2021 BMW X2.
Convenience Package
Price: $2,250
Available on both sDrive28i and xDrive28i trims, the convenience package includes lumbar support for the front seats, power-folding side mirrors, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, hands-free access for the power tailgate, a nice ambient lighting for the cabin, and a universal garage-door opener. This package also lets you have either a free panoramic moonroof or remove the standard moonroof to save $1,150. Very convenient indeed.
M Sport X Package
Price: $4,400
Available on both sDrive28i and xDrive28i trims, the M Sport X package features everything from the Convenience Package with the additional M bits and pieces for these non-M models. Outside, there are larger and sporty-looking 19-inch M wheels and Shadowline exterior trim. Meanwhile, the inside gets a unique interior trim and an M Sport steering wheel.
Moreover, BMW would also include a sport-tuned suspension and the ability to opt-in an M sport suspension and a rear spoiler for $400 and $150, respectively.
Premium Package
Price: s/xDrive28i – 3,650, M35i – $1,400
The Premium Package includes every feature from the Convenience Package with the addition of heated front seats and steering wheel, an extended 10.25-inch iDrive navigation, an infotainment display, and a multi-color head-up display.
This package also includes the ability to opt-in an adaptive cruise control, and Harman Kardon surround sound system for $1,000 and $875, respectively.

Towing Capacity
Although BMW does not provide an optional trailer hitch for the 2021 X2, it is claimed that the crossover can handle a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 lbs.
Warranty
The warranty that BMW will include on top of your 2021 X2 purchase includes:
- Limited warranty of up to 4 years/50,000 miles
- Roadside Assistance Program of up to 4 years with unlimited mileage
- Rust perforation limited warranty of up to 12 years with unlimited mileage
- Complimentary scheduled maintenance of up to 3 years/36,000 miles
Verdict
Overall, the 2021 BMW X2 is a sporty luxury crossover that you’ll certainly have fun driving. We rarely recommend getting the top-of-the-range model on any of our reviews, but in this case, the M35i served as the most desirable trim with the intriguing M Sport upgrades.
Otherwise, it is hard to justify why you should choose the X2 over the BMW X1, as it is still as luxurious but more practical, more comfortable for a daily commute, similarly fun to drive, and cheaper as well.
Still, if you decided to get one, make sure to be wise with the optional extras, though, as you can easily reach the $50,000 mark when you opt for a lot of them. For that money, you can get the bigger brother BMW X3, which is more of a proper SUV than just a jacked-up hatchback. Or an entry-level Porsche Macan is also a nice option with a similar price tag.
