The latest Mazda3 hatchback is set to be officially unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show. Mazda has released a shadowy teaser image revealing that the star car will be launched as a Fastback saloon, as well as a five-door hatchback. Sharp looks are expected, particularly because the Kai concept car that made its debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show was so striking, and thought to be a good precursor of the next Mazda3. Kai is lower, longer and has a stretched wheelbase compared with the current model, while its bold grille, curvaceous flanks and circular tail lights gained plenty of fans. It looks impressively exotic for a family hatchback.

Mazda says the new model “marks the beginning of a whole new generation of Mazda cars that will deliver new dimensions of driving joy to customers around the world.” The fourth-generation car will be its first model to feature the highly-anticipated SkyActiv-X petrol engine, with Spark Controlled Compression Ignition, that’s capable of compression ignition for diesel-rivalling running costs.
