This four-seater #Pininfarina cabrio, with the optional #Kugelfischer fuel injection – offered from #1962 – has been in Sweden from new, where the roads are not salted. It was restored about 14 years ago, although there’s no supporting paperwork – a Swedish trait, according to the seller.
The structure looks to be solid and rot-free, the doors fitting well with the swages lining up. The front-end paint has just been refreshed, but a couple of blemishes remain elsewhere: a crack at the base of the driver’s door and some chipping under the boot lock, probably from keys. The recent work has left the rubber gaskets under the side repeaters a bit tired and perished, but that is to nitpick and they’re easily replaced.
The stainless-steel bumpers are smart with light polish marks, as is the rest of the brightwork including the fleur-de-lis embellisher on the tailpipe, although there’s one tiny crack in the right rear indicator. The tyres are Cyclones with lots of tread, and an older Ventura on the spare.
The front seats have been retrimmed in leather; the rear bench has the original vinyl covering, which is still good. The new-looking hood is easy to erect, the carpets are lightly faded in places and there’s a #Becker Europa radio fitted. All of the instruments and fittings are in good shape and the horn ring is intact, although the dashboard top covering is a little wavy.
Under the bonnet – this was the first year of the five-bearing version of the slant-four – it’s all tidy with no leaks. The oil is clean and between the dipstick marks, while the coolant is visible and blueish in the rad top tank.
The 1618cc motor starts easily and soon warms. It punches above its weight, feeling like a larger unit, with coolant temperature steady at 80ºC and ammeter showing charge. Both the ride and steering are fluid-smooth. The only quirks are an odd gearchange pattern (like a 2CV’s) that needs learning, and slightly grabby all-round drum brakes, though they pull up well enough. It’s just been MoT’d and will be UK registered before sale.
SUMMARY #Peugeot 404
Good overall; some new paint; a couple of minor blemishes
Excellent, with new hood; carpets slightly discoloured
Everything works perfectly
For Gorgeous and a lovely drive
Against That paint to rectify
SHOULD I BUY IT?
A rather nice example of a rare model that goes deceptively well. If it was a coachbuilt Italian tourer, we’d be looking at twice the price.
