2013-2018

The BMW 4 Series (F32) is a compact executive coupé manufactured by the German automaker BMW. First official details of the 4 Concept 4 Series were released to the public by an official press release on 5 December 2012, detailing the intention to replace the current 3 Series coupé with a new 4 series line to further differentiate the more sporty coupé. This move mirrored the strategy of arch rival Audi, who spun off the coupé and convertible versions of the A4 into the separate A5 nameplate some years earlier.

The BMW 4 Series is also available in a retractable hard-top convertible form (F33) and in the Gran Coupe body style (F36) since the 2014 model year.

The 4 Series Coupe shares all technical features with F30 3 Series. The interior is almost the same as in the 3 Series except for the 2+2 seating configuration, and the exterior also shares the overall styling of the 3 Series. Its wheelbase is 110.6 inches, two inches longer than the 3 Series coupe and identical to the 3-series sedan. BMW has increased the front track by 1.8 inches, for 60.8 inches, and 3.1 inches to the rear, for 62.7. Its overall width is 71.9 inches, 1.7 inches wider than the 3 Coupe, and 0.6 inches lower, at 53.6. Overall length is 182.7 inches. The BMW 4 Series made its debut in Detroit, United States at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013

The BMW 503 is a two door 2+2 grand touring automobile from the 1950s. BMW developed the 503 alongside their 507 roadster in an attempt to sell a significant number of luxury cars in the United States. The 503 and 507 cost about twice their projected price and did not recover their costs. During production from May 1956 to March 1959, 413 units of the 503 were built. Even though it was a top and prestige model it resulted in heavy losses for BMW.

Concept and design

Hanns Grewenig, sales manager of BMW, repeatedly requested the development of a sports car based on their 501 and 502 luxury sedans. In early 1954, influenced by the public reaction to Mercedes-Benz 300SL and 190SL show cars in New York in February 1954, the management of BMW approved the project.

Max Hoffman, an influential automobile importer in the United States, saw early design sketches by BMW's Ernst Loof, and suggested to industrial designer Albrecht von Goertz that he should submit design proposals to BMW. Based on these proposals, BMW contracted Goertz to design the 503 and 507 in November 1954.

The 503 was a 2+2 grand tourer that was available as either a coupe or a convertible. It was noted for having a cleaner and more modern design than the "Baroque Angel" 501-based sedans. The convertible version of the 503 was the first European convertible with an electrically operated top.

501/502 1952-1964 Club owners

Debuting at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1951, BMW’s first postwar car—and its first built in Munich and not Essen (by then part of East Germany, the factory seized by the Communist government) — the 501 quickly earned the nickname “Baroque Angel” for its elegance and luxurious appointment; it also had a fair resemblance to the proportions and lines of the Jaguar Mark VII. One of its few prewar links was found under the hood in the form of the 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine of the 501.

But when the 502 was added to the mix in 1954, BMW offered the first German-manufactured V8 and the first aluminum-block V8 sold anywhere. The pushrod, OHV 2.6-liter engine produced 100 hp, with later, higherdisplacement variants pushing output to 140 hp, making the 502 the fastest sedan sold in Germany for a time.

ISETTA/600 (1955-1962)

BMW didn’t design the Isetta, nor were they the first to manufacture it, but as the larger, more luxurious V8 and six-cylinder-powered cars struggled to gain a foothold in the market following BMW’s postwar reentry into the world of automobile manufacturing, the little car licensed from its Italian originator (more famous for refrigerators than cars) kept BMW afloat during some fairly lean years. With its engines based on BMW’s motorcycle offerings — one of its strong suits — the Isetta succeeded massively in a way that the big cars did not. The Isetta’s success allowed BMW to develop its own rearengined car, the 700, which in turn paved the way for the Neue Klasse sedans.

Toyota and BMW are working together on a replacement for the BMW Z4. With that in mind, it’s easy to understand why BMW hasn’t touched the Z4. Not that we’re complaining. It’s a beautiful drop-top with a lot of character. The balance and more-than-adequate power of the Z4 sDrive28 are charming. When equipped with a six-speed manual, the sDrive28 embodies the classic spirit of the roadster, with all-day touring comfort as well as back-road prowess.

BMW is introducing the X5 xDrive40e, a plug-in hybrid variant. Will it be more efficient than the diesel? That remains to be seen, but like the diesel, the plug-in’s eight-speed automatic transmission should help improve fuel economy. Until we can drive the plug-in, we say go for the diesel, which feels balanced in this luxury SUV. If worrying about your carbon footprint makes your eyes glaze over, try the absolutely unnecessary, utterly insane X5 M.
