501/502 1952-1964 Club owners

Debuting at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1951, BMW’s first postwar car—and its first built in Munich and not Essen (by then part of East Germany, the factory seized by the Communist government) — the 501 quickly earned the nickname “Baroque Angel” for its elegance and luxurious appointment; it also had a fair resemblance to the proportions and lines of the Jaguar Mark VII. One of its few prewar links was found under the hood in the form of the 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine of the 501.

But when the 502 was added to the mix in 1954, BMW offered the first German-manufactured V8 and the first aluminum-block V8 sold anywhere. The pushrod, OHV 2.6-liter engine produced 100 hp, with later, higherdisplacement variants pushing output to 140 hp, making the 502 the fastest sedan sold in Germany for a time.

Rover 10 P2 1939 - 1948 The final version of the 10 was launched in 1939. This was part of the Rover P2 range, along with Rover 12, Rover 14, Rover 16 and Rover 20 models. The chassis was slightly modified getting an extra half inch (12 mm) in the wheelbase and the engine got a new cylinder head increasing power from 44 to 48 bhp. Synchromesh was fitted to the top two ratios on the gearbox. The body was restyled in the Rover style of the time. The price was now GBP275 for the saloon but few were made before the outbreak of war and production stopping in 1940.

The Coventry factory was damaged by bombing in November 1940 and when production restarted it was from the new Solihull works. The cars were little changed but a left hand drive version to help the export drive arrived in 1947 along with an optional heater.

The final cars were made in 1947.

ISETTA/600 (1955-1962)

BMW didn’t design the Isetta, nor were they the first to manufacture it, but as the larger, more luxurious V8 and six-cylinder-powered cars struggled to gain a foothold in the market following BMW’s postwar reentry into the world of automobile manufacturing, the little car licensed from its Italian originator (more famous for refrigerators than cars) kept BMW afloat during some fairly lean years. With its engines based on BMW’s motorcycle offerings — one of its strong suits — the Isetta succeeded massively in a way that the big cars did not. The Isetta’s success allowed BMW to develop its own rearengined car, the 700, which in turn paved the way for the Neue Klasse sedans.
