So we’ve established that on the road Ferrari’s 789bhp 812 Superfast is, well, super fast. So fast that it can often feel like the only dim point is the organic squidgy bit in the middle. We thought it was high time to get it out on a track then and start finding out where its real limits lie, so this week’s ‘car pictures of the week’ gallery consists of some of the behind-the-scenes shots from our track session in the 812, as featured in this month’s.

The 812 Superfast is often a slightly misunderstood beast. It’s front-mounted engine and lineage derived from models like the 550 Maranello might insinuate this is a DBS-rivalling GT, but the 812 is anything but. This is a scalpel-like machine, just as focussed on outright performance as cars like the McLaren 720S and Lamborghini Aventador, but if anything even more tricky to exploit. It’s a car that, much like the F12 that came before, often shocks with its intensity, its whip-snapping 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine dominating the entire driving experience like few other supercars.

So to tame the beast, we sent Dickie Meaden up to Anglesey to ‘warm up’ a few sets of P Zeros, then set a lap in Ferrari’s most powerful front-engined model yet. This is not quite as straightforward as you might expect, however, as Ferrari insisted on sending up a support crew along with the Italian-plated 812 for the lap. With such a huge amount of power running through just the rear wheels it was always going to be a challenge to exploit the grip from this particular 812’s Pirelli P Zero Corsas, a new optional tyre compound that is not available until later this year, but running on this car slightly ahead of schedule.

As a result, this is definitely one of those cars that to go fast, you have to calm it right down, control the wheel spin, and meter out the power with the assistance of both the on-board systems and your right foot. When all the systems are switched off, well, what do you think happens with Dickie in the driver’s seat and 789bhp coursing through only two driven wheels?
