The stock SQ7 makes impressive figures, but ABT have taken this high-tech TDI to the next level, giving it 520hp and 970Nm…
The SQ7 is a big deal for Audi. It’s the fastest SUV on the market and the first production vehicle to feature an electric-powered compressor, which runs off its own 48-volt power system.
The idea is that the little compressor (it isn’t a turbo), gets things moving from ridiculously low revs (1000rpm) so that there’s no perceptible lag. This allows the 4.0 twin turbo #V8
to produce immense low-down torque, which makes for rather rapid acceleration. The official figure is 0-62mph in 4.9secs, which is damn impressive for a large, diesel SUV.
I was fortune to be invited to the official UK launch back in the summer, and was blown away by the capability of the SQ7. It’s deceptively quick, superrefined and handles like a car – not something that’s simple to achieve. The electrical system plays a part here too, by powering the adaptive suspension – firming up the active anti-roll bars to prevent body roll when cornering, then softening them again to retain comfort. It really works, too.
Add to this a sumptuous interior, which includes the industry leading virtual cockpit as standard and the SQ7 really is the perfect all-round package. However, should you wish for a little more power and individuality, then German specialists, ABT, may have a solution.
The headline grabber is ABT’s Power New Generation module. This clever box has been designed to increase the performance potential of the 4.0 TDI V8, all within safe parameters. With 900Nm already available, ABT has been restrained in taking it up to 970Nm to preserve the drivetrain. That said, almost 1000Nm is serious twist (an RS6 Performance makes 750Nm). Power has risen from 435hp to a mighty 520hp.
Bear in mind this is, in effect, a plug-and-play tuning solution, with no hardware upgrades required. Factor in the electric-powered compressor and the off-the-line shove of this ABT-tuned SQ7 will be something special. But it’s the midrange abilities that will really astound you – the sort of 30-70mph acceleration that we use every day. Here, the stock SQ7 has been timed at around 4.5secs, so with an extra 85hp and 79Nm, the ABT version should comfortably beat this.
Of course, being ABT, the chassis of this premium SUV has been subtly enhanced to complement the newfound power of the engine.
The suspension has been lowered 20mm courtesy of the ABT Level Control module. This gives a more sporty appearance – perfect for swallowing up those monstrous 22in wheels wrapped in 295/35 Continental or Dunlop rubber.
So there we have it, the SQ7 is still fresh out of the factory and represents one of the most technologically advanced offerings from Ingolstadt. But, if you want to push it even further, then this ABT package is well worth consideration.
