Unique Ghia-bodied Maserati 5000GT spent half a century in the Saudi Arabian sun
Like many Maseratis, the Mistral is named after a strong wind – in this case, a powerful little number that blows chilled air from southern France into the northern Mediterranean. Around 800 of these pretty Frua-bodied coupés were built over the seven-year production life. Some had alloy bodies, some steel, plus there were three different engines.
Maserati has launched a new Ghibli limited edition called the Ribelle. The paint is Nero Ribelle mica, supplemented by gloss black 19-inch alloy wheels with red details and red brake callipers. Inside is a two-tone black/red theme, with premium leather and a Ribelle logo in black piano wood.

From the cockpit. Faithful recreations of long-lost cars have been among the highlights of historic racing in recent years. When Drive-my was launched in 1982, the prospect of Lancia D50s, Cunningham C4Rs and Maserati Tipo 151s competing in anger would have been a fantasy, but now they’ve all starred at Goodwood. The amazing grid of 25 Bugattis blasting away at the wonderful 72 nd Members’ Meeting was another first for Lord March’s team, but the biggest surprise was a Type 57G running among the raucous pack of supercharged Molsheim open-wheelers.
This latest turnaround plan for Maserati does not lack ambition. Multi-billion investment in facilities and all-new models and electric cars would be a big ask for even the world’s largest car makers, let alone one that didn’t even sell 40,000 cars last year. So is this one to file under ‘We’ll believe it when we see it’, or one to heartily praise the logic of?
Maserati will unveil its long-awaited Alfieri sports car at the Geneva motor show next year, company boss Harald Wester has confirmed.
The Turin Motor Show 60 years ago marked the debut of Maserati’s 5000 GT, widely regarded as the world’s first supercar. Built for the Shah of Persia, the ‘AM103’ project was an all-new model designed around the 450S racer’s V8 engine, bored out to 5.0 litres.

Maserati will reinvent itself in 2020 with a spectacular new mid-engined supercar. We’ve been to Modena to uncover its secrets.
Replacements for Maserati’s GranTurismo and GranCabrio models have been confirmed by the Modena-based car maker. Announcing its future plans, the GT and GC will return for a second generation. Maserati says the new pair will be electrified, although they will also be available with petrol power. The coupe is due to be released in 2021, the convertible (previous model pictured below right) following in 2022.

Maserati is reviving its Royale badge – last used for the Quattroporte III of 1986 – with a new limited edition. The Royale will be offered on all models with V6 engines: Quattroporte, Levante and Ghibli. The Royale special series is available in two unique colours, Blu Royale and Verde Royale, while bespoke wheels are also fitted. Royale interiors are based on GranLusso spec, with leather or Pieno Fiore two-tone leather, high-gloss inserts and a ‘One of 100’ plate. Also standard are a Bowers & Wilkins hi-fi, electric sunroof, privacy glass and Cold Weather, Premium and Driving Assistance Plus Packages.

Maserati to pioneer EVS for FCA The Trident brand will spearhead FCA’s (Fiat Chyrsler Automobiles) electrification plans with the first car being a ‘halo’ product based on the 2014 Alfieri concept. Joining the Alfieri (coupé and cabriolet) will be full-electric versions of the Quattroporte and Levante.
Maserati has revealed what it will call its forthcoming mid-engined supercar: MC20. Short for ‘Maserati Corse 2020’, it celebrates the fact that the brand will soon return to racing with the new model.
