WO Bentley is a name as instant a symbol of ‘British-ness’ as Burberry, Barbour and Aston Martin. There’s a historic and somewhat ironic link between Bentley and Aston Martin, too, which goes back to 1912 and a hill on Lord Rothschild’s Buckinghamshire estate. WO didn’t start with motor cars. His first road experience was via a motorcycle. In 1906 he acquired a 3hp Quadrant, a rugged machine that had seen success in endurance events. Perhaps encouraged by the bike’s ability, WO entered the 400-mile London-Edinburgh Trial the following year and won a gold medal.

Special Mulsanne. Bentley’s latest limited edition model – the Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner – has been announced, designed to pay homage to the founding father of the company. And uniquely, it even incorporates a genuine piece of Bentley history into each of the 100 examples that are due to be built.
Bentley unveiled the latest bespoke product from its Mulliner division. The all-new Bacalar is described as “the ultimate expression of twoseat, open-air luxury”. And with just twelve examples set to be hand-built, this is certainly the most exclusive two-door Bentley of recent times.
By the time this issue of Rolls-Royce & Bentley Driver goes on sale, this astonishingly original Derby Bentley – with a genuine 15,500 miles showing on its odometer – will have gone under the hammer. Chassis number B135FC, described as ‘the most original and best-preserved Derby Bentley in the world’, was expected to sell for between £450,000 and £550,000. First registered on March 1st, 1937, the Vanden Plas-bodied drophead coupe has had just three owners to date, the most long-term being Mr W.
Cars prepped for ice racing are usually fairly lightweight and run skinny studded tyres, the aim being to scrabble for whatever purchase is possible while skating balletically across the surface. But Bentley clearly had a meeting in which the principle conclusion was ‘Er, sod that’ – so they’ve built this massive thing. Look at it. It’s mental. It’s got a whacking great 6.0-litre W12 engine for starters, as well as three-chamber air springs with a 48v antiroll system.

As first suggested back in 2013, Bentley looks like it could be about to produce a serious two-seat sports car to rival products from Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren, if Geneva’s curiously named EXP 10 Speed 6 concept is any indication.

A group of Bentley enthusiasts, led by Ralph Lauren, Lord Bamford and former CC columnist Simon Kidston, has sent an impassioned letter of protest to Bentley Motors’ chairman Adrian Hallmark. They are dismayed at the company’s plans to produce a dozen handcrafted replicas of the ‘Team Blower’ Le Mans cars that raced in the Twenties.
L-Series production to cease after six decades’ continuous service
Bentley is set to replace its ageing Mulsanne saloon flagship with a new rangetopping SUV, CEO Adrian Hallmark has hinted. The new model could potentially sit at the top of an extended range of SUVs complementing the Bentayga, which has already transformed the firm’s sales volumes and accounted for 47% of Bentleys sold in 2019.
To help celebrate its centenary in 2019, Bentley has announced the Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner, said to be inspired by the firm’s illustrious motorsport history and incorporating a number of distinctive features. Just 100 examples of this special edition will be built throughout the year.
