Mercedes-Benz is planning to expand its luxury Maybach line with a range-topping version of the GLS – and the first prototypes are being tested on German roads. The third generation of Mercedes’ largest SUV is set to make its debut at this month’s Los Angeles motor show, but the Maybach version is likely to be shown at a later date.
MG has taken the wraps off its first all-electric car at the Guangzhou Motor Show. Based on the MG ZS SUV, the eZS will be a direct rival to the Hyundai Kona Electric when it goes on sale.

Finally, Tesla has taken the wraps off the new Tesla Roadster - the next generation of the company’s original sports model. Chief specifications include a 0-60mph time of 1.9 seconds and 0-100mph in a neck-breaking 4.2 seconds. “The fastest production car ever made. Period”, enthused Elon Musk. The quarter mile sprint can be completed in 8.9 seconds, “the first time any production car has broken 9 seconds over a quarter mile”, Musk added.
“Global, affordable and electric”, says Renault of its latest electric car. The A-segment (i.e. small) K-ZE will first arrive in China, followed by other markets including Europe. The K-ZE will arrive in 2019 and is said to be capable of 155 miles (250km) NEDC.

Vauxhall’s new Vivaro has just been revealed, heralding a bright future for the manufacturer’s Luton plant. Ready to land in dealer showrooms this summer, the third-gen cargo carrier is based on a state-of-the-art platform and available in two lengths (4.95m and 5.30m). Kia has introduced the world’s media to its latest Soul EV in Los Angeles, with a new battery pack expected to give a serious hike in driving range between top-ups. Performance will be more stirring, and fans of the quirky and boxy Korean crossover vehicle should note some well-judged styling adjustments. It’s the battery that’s most exciting, with a new liquid-cooled lithium-ion polymer design and impressive 64kWh capacity shared with the all-electric Hyundai Kona. The Soul EV is still undergoing final testing, but it’s likely to have a range of around 280 miles, making long journeys significantly more feasible. That’s doubly the case as a Combined Charging System (CCS) with fast-charging is also standard, so owners will be able to add more miles in less time at service areas equipped with the right charging posts.

Jag’s sports car hasn’t bitten the dust! So much so that a facelift is due next year with slimmer headlights and a larger front grille, some additional tech inside and new engines. Relax, though – the next F-Type will still get a rip-snorting V8; it just might have some BMW markings on it. Along with the new look, Jaguar will be stuffing more driver safety aids and self-driving tech in the F-Type to help it pass safety regs.
Audi has stunned the crowds at the LA Auto Show with its sleek e-tron GT concept, a flagship electric vehicle that’s a direct attack on the Tesla Model S and shares many of its parts with the Porsche Taycan. It also marks the first time Audi Sport – usually responsible for models like the Audi R8 supercar – has been involved in the development of a plug-in model.
It’s the new 911, more and less. The new 911, the 992, was introduced in Carrera S and 4S forms, and has since seduced everyone who’s been anywhere near it. Not content with Mercedes-Benz’s X-Class hogging the premium- bakkie limelight, BMW has built a one-off design study for an X7-based double cab. The 3,0-litre inline-six turbopetrol-powered (250 kW) model boasts a luxurious cabin, 1 400 mm loadbay with handcrafted load area and dual-level air suspension. BMW has stated the bakkie is not destined for production but could considerable public interest change that stance?
Electric Toyota. Toyota’s electrified vehicle strategy between 2020-2030 has hotted up, with the announcement by Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota, stating the development and launch plans of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
