‘RING RECORD LAP! 919 Hybrid Evo sets new Nürburgring-Nordschleife record
The record which that time beats, set 35 years ago in 1983, was held by the late Stefan Bellof. Behind the wheel of a Group C works Porsche 956, Bellof lapped the place in just 6:11.13 during qualifying. The shorter and much safer GP-strecke opened in 1984, ending its Group C hosting days, cementing Bellof’s time as the last word in speed around this dangerous ribbon of tarmac — until Porsche asked management very nicely for a special exception run.
After Porsche won Le Mans for the third time with the 919 Hybrid, clocking up a total of 18 overall wins in the race’s history, they decided that before sticking the cars into a museum for the rest of their lives they would see how fast they could really go. Without regulations restricting power, Porsche bumped the cars from 373kW to 537kW and beefed up the aero.
Bernhard clocked a massive 367kph on the main straight and lapped the circuit a full minute faster than Bellof’s record.
