Fastest Five. The 2019 BMW M5 F90 is the model that created the high-performance, super-saloon genre. Now the all-new, sixth generation saloon is available in the UK, equipped with an enhanced V8 engine, a new M-specific, all-wheel drive system known as M xDrive, plus performance statistics that surpass all previous incarnations. It’s also wrestled the crown of ‘Fastest Accelerating Road-going BMW’ from the M760iL xDrive G12.
Key to this heightened level of performance is the introduction of the variable-mode M xDrive. When first started, the car defaults to four-wheel-drive mode, with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) switched on. But there are various driving dynamics modes, up to a track-friendly, pure rear-wheel drive without DSC, available for selection.
Power is supplied by the latest, 600hp, 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, delivering a maximum torque of 750Nm. The result is a 0-62mph time of just 3.4 seconds. Regrettably, such performance doesn’t come cheap, and the car’s ‘on the road’ price is a not inconsiderable £89,645.
