F1 versus COVID-19

Formula 1 teams solve hugely complex technical problems fast, and AMG has shifted the engineering might that’s seen it dominate hybrid-era F1 to helping the NHS cope with Covid-19.

Working with personnel from University College London, Mercedes-AMG engineers have reverse-engineered a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device. It’s able to help patients with breathing difficulties, and keep them out of intensive-care beds required for more serious cases. The device proved effective in China and Italy. The design was finalised within 100 hours, rapidly approved and is now being produced at a rate of up to 1000 units a day, using machines normally be used to make F1 components.
