Ford announces Focus ST Wagon

Ford’s ST models have always offered accessible performance in practical and usable packages, sometimes arriving in unexpected bodystyles. While the concept of the fast estate may be well established in the modern era, it was still something of a radical notion back at the turn of the century, when Ford decided to offer the Focus ST170 (and Mondeo ST220) in estate form. This allowed family-friendly practicality combined with some pretty devastating performance, and it’s a tradition the sub-brand has continued to the present day. The previous-generation Mk3 Focus ST was offered in estate form and, as of May this year, we know that the current Mk4 Focus ST will also be brought to market as a station wagon too.

The on-paper specs are pretty formidable too – we’re looking at a 276bhp 2.3-litre EcoBoost, neatly mirroring the power cap of the high-end sports cars of our old Gran Turismo days, matched to a six-speed manual ’box (or seven-speed auto if the buyer prefers). An electronic limited-slip differential, rev-matching function and selectable drive modes help blend track-day performance with everyday usability, and for those with an eye on motorway commutes, there’s always the option of speccing the 2.0-litre (187bhp) EcoBlue diesel engine.

The full-fat petrol version is a car we’re very interested to try, as the existing hatchback variant is a stellar handler, and in the case of the old ST this translated very neatly to the estate version. There’s also colossal carrying capability, with rear seats that fold almost completely flat and wide, tall proportions, yet it’s well hidden by the sleek exterior lines. ST Wagon prices start at £30,595 for the EcoBlue model, and £33,095 for the 2.3 EcoBoost. Full prices and specs can be found on ford.co.uk or at your local dealer.
