Bahnstormers’ Lightening strike

Dogleg ‘box M535i tops the bill of nine E28s found by specialist

Wiltshire-based BMW gurus Classic Bahnstormers (CB) has taken on nine E28 5 Series projects from a collector – and they’re all for sale. Operating as a one-stop shop, the 5ers – ranging from a triumvirate of K-Jet 520s to a pair of M535is – represent a considerable chunk of the petrol E28 range.

All but one of the cars is right-hand drive; all UK registered and nearly all E28 variants are represented in this haul. The cars came from a single collector who, having built up a rapport with CB, decided to sell ‘a couple’ to the specialist; in the end, nine cars were trailered back to its Minety base.

Modern Classics has long touted the E28 M535i as a shrewd investment: in June 2017, it took pride of place as our Clever Money Cars tip and CB has a choice of two manuals. Built in 1986 and 1987 respectively, the latter car has a dogleg gearbox, Alpine White paint, 123k on the clock, with every part of the body kit where it should be. Three 520is, two manual, one automatic, are also up for grabs, joined by a 525e (eta) Shadowline, 528i manual and 535i self-shifter.

Each E28 varies in condition, and at the moment, none are roadworthy. All but one car (a 1983 520i manual) has six-digit mileages on their odometers.

CB is keen to move the cars on with an in-house restoration contract – you buy the car, then it restores your E28 to a minimum of MoT standard. All the E28s are HPI clear – and CB has provided the last seven VIN digits for any potential buyer to do their own checks, should they feel the need. More details at classicbahnstormers.com
