Tesco to offer 2,400 charging points

Volkswagen, Tesco and Pod Point have announced a collaboration that will see 2,400 charging bays rolled out in Tesco Extra and Superstore car parks. It’s a move that will increase the UK’s number of public charging bays by 14 per cent, with 7kW charging offered free of charge.

Rolled out across 600 stores within the next three years, there’ll be a “small cost in line with the market rate” for owners with compatible vehicles to use rapid 50kW charging bays. Volkswagen said in a statement that its involvement in the deal “underlines its commitment to becoming a leading player in e-mobility and deliver on its pledge to sell one million cars a year worldwide by 2025.” A string of ID models are set to arrive from next year, including a Golf-sized hatchback. It will be followed from 2020 by an ID Buzz MPV and ID Crozz SUV.

According to Tesco, it’s a decision that builds on its commitment to 100 per cent renewable electricity. Tesco’s UK CEO, Jason Tarry, said: “We want to be the leading electric vehicle energy provider and to support our customers with more sustainable solutions. Our EV network provides a sustainable choice for our customers and charging while they shop makes their lives easier.” Erik Fairbairn, CEO of Pod Point added: “It is a massive leap forward for the UK and a significant step in our mission to put a Pod Point everywhere you park.”
