  • BTG Bashing Toyota Supra

Simon Hart and his Toyota Supra

Simon Hart and his Toyota Supra known as ‘Bignum’ are breaking the internet. Again. This time it’s a video of his fastest ever bridge-to-gantry lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. Simon recorded a jaw-dropping 7min 18sec BTG lap, believed to be the fastest ever lap of the ’Ring by a MkIV Toyota Supra. Simon completed the record-breaking lap during a trackday there, and his 700bhp beast was wearing 18in slick tyres that had been used by a BTCC team. Under the bonnet lies a fully-forged 2JZ, a single Borg Warner 366 billet turbocharger and Syvecs ECU.

First Toyota Supra A90 sells for US$2.1M

Imagine owning the first production Toyota Supra A90 to roll off the factory floor. Now imagine handing over US$2.1M for that honour. Yeah, it is a ridiculous amount of money, but that’s exactly what the ‘20201’ car recently sold for at a Barrett-Jackson charity auction. So, while it’s an eye-watering sum, at least the money is going towards two very worthwhile charities.

  • Toyota Supra enters NASCAR

    Toyota Supra enters NASCAR

No, your eyes aren’t lying to you and this isn’t some kind of weird dream. Toyota has actually entered a Supra into NASCAR, starting next year. While it may not seem super clear why Toyota chose to pursue a pushrod V8-powered Supra going around an oval 500 times at first, they have their reasons and it’s down to TRD USA. The connection to NASCAR came back in 2003 when Toyota and TRD were committing big time to open-wheel series, winning Indy 500, but decided it wasn’t in-line with the company’s goals and were a far cry from what the punters could buy at dealerships.

  • Toyota Supras are primed to go supersonic soon

Toyota Supras are primed to go supersonic soon

I’d like to say there’s a chance of you finding an unmolested original ’1993 to ‘1996 UK-spec Toyota Supra A80, but you’ll be looking long and hard. The modifying craze reduced the supply of stock cars to double figures. That and the fact that only around 600 were sold in the UK – hardly surprising with a 1993 list price of £40,000. The A80 fourth-gen Supra is a card-carrying classic with more horses than an M3, better power to weight ratio than a Ferrari 348 and a de-limited top speed of 177mph. Sixty comes up in under five seconds and that 3.0-litre 24v six with its sequential turbos is a bulletproof gem. Toyota did everything to lighten the A80 – even including hollow carpet tufting. The attention to engineering detail was obsessive with a bespoke Getrag V160 six-speed ’box, LSD, ABS, traction control and even a motorised active air dam. Not forgetting that raunchy rear spoiler (also hollow to save weight).

  • Toyota trumps Porsche at auction

    Toyota trumps Porsche at auction

The second stage of RM Sotheby’s Youngtimer Collection sale threw up some startling results at the Amelia Island event in America in March. We first reported on the epic collection of ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s prime modern classics being offered from one collection a couple of issues back. The first sale, at Rétromobile, threw up some big numbers for rare Alpinas and AMGs, but most were in line with predictions. Not at Amelia Island, though – a Mazda RX-7 FD went for £38k, while a 2800-mile Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo sold for £40,500. Then up stepped a black Toyota Supra MkIV. With just 11,200 miles and a manual gearbox, it smashed its pre-sale estimate and sold for £132,417.
