Mercedes built a six-wheel G-Class, so this 416bhp ‘concept’ is surely a given for production. Words Kyle Fortune. Photography Bemd Hanselmann and Daniel Maurer.

Jurassic Park: The Lost World Benz On Film: 1997 ML-Class Mainly responsible for getting everyone killed, The Lost World’s Mercedes ML-Class has endured a rough time on screen. But is there redemption?
Mercedes-Benz is planning to expand its luxury Maybach line with a range-topping version of the GLS – and the first prototypes are being tested on German roads. The third generation of Mercedes’ largest SUV is set to make its debut at this month’s Los Angeles motor show, but the Maybach version is likely to be shown at a later date.
Mercedes doesn’t share VW’s conviction that take-up of electric cars will be widespread and swift. Sure, there are 11 new Mercedes EVs due for launch in 2019-2021, but there’s a major programme of internal-combustion development continuing in parallel.
Under new management, the Three-Pointed Star plans to return to its solidly-built, classically-designed, technologically-superior glory days – and cut costs in the process. By Georg Kacher.
Mercedes-Benz and Chinese car maker Geely have carried out preliminary talks on how the two might co-operate on a series of projects, including future four-cylinder petrol engine and dual-clutch gearbox development, according to senior officials from the German firm. Geely – which has a 9.7% stake in Mercedes parent Daimler and owns brands such as Volvo and Lotus – cemented operational ties with Mercedes’ passenger car division in early 2019, when it agreed to purchase a 50% stake in Smart.
Mercedes have dominated the world of Formula 1 since the introduction of V6 turbo engines to the sport in 2014, and there’s no sign yet of them relinquishing their crown. Unveiled at Silverstone in February, the new W09 EQ Power+ looks ready to carry the team to their fifth winning year in a row. Race drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have both been enthusiastic about the new car’s capabilities, and initial test drives in Barcelona earlier this year showed promise.
Soaring Away. The 300SL Gullwing evolved from a purebred racer – but the road car was very successful in competition, too. Words Delwyn Mallett. Archive photographs Daimler AG.
Another Benz that’s screamingly cheap right now is the 1992-1998 C140 coupé. At Classic Car Auctions’s sale at the NEC Restoration Show, a gorgeous Brilliant Silver one-owner CL420 was knocked down for £5772. This was no ordinary W140 two-door but a genuine 79,000-mile car with every invoice from new, 10 MB dealer stamps and a 118-page history file. In March, Historics at Brooklands sold a mint 1993 600CL V12 in white with dark blue leather that had done duty on MB Club stands as one of the best-preserved 600 CLs left for just £7358. And these are rare cars, with only 80 CL420s and 92 CL600s on UK roads.

New GLE Coupe. Mercedes targets the US and China with its fast backed SUV, also set to go on sale in the UK this year. Combining the high driving position and off-road capabilities of an SUV with the sweeping tail of a coupe and the nimble handling of a sporting machine, the new GLE coupe is not exactly conventional.
Cars with personalised numberplates are 50 per cent more likely to get broken into than those with conventional registration numbers, and Mercedes models are the ones most likely to attract the wrong kind of attention, according to research from price comparison website moneysupermarket.com Approximately one in 10 cars in the UK wears a cherished plate, but approximately 12 per cent of those (around 375,000) are Mercedes models, making the brand the marque most likely to carry a cherished number, ahead of Porsche, Lexus, Jaguar and BMW.
The A200 will introduce Aussies to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan when it arrives in April. Benz’s booted baby is only expected to generate incremental sales for A-Class alongside the hatchback, and will subsequently be offered in both A180 and A250 forms, each at a premium around $2000 compared with a hatch of the same specification.
Following the launch of the new A-Class earlier in the year, the engine line-up has been expanded with the addition of A 200 d W177 and A 220 d W177 models, both powered by Mercedes- Benz’s brand-new OM654 engine. Each is mated to a new eight-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission and have been tested to new RDE-2 emissions standards, meaning that these A-Class models will avoid the taxation surcharge that the Government added to diesel models last year.

A poke around the new C-Class wagon confirms Mercedes is at the top of its game. Luggage at the ready - the new C-Class estate is coming! We attended the global launch and came away very impressed indeed. Estate cars used to be utility vehicles with an outward appearance that was subservient to their primary function as load carriers. That all changed with the rise of the lifestyle era in the 1990s, and today’s estate car buyers value aesthetics as much as practical strengths. The new, S205 C-Class estate - arriving in the UK this September - scores very well in both respects, with improved practicality within a sleek body that achieves a best-in-class drag coefficient figure of just 0.27Cd.
But the new Mercedes-AMG C63 is expected to retain 500bhp-plus and four-wheel drive when it goes on sale in 2021
If you think the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pick-up is a bit too ‘sensible’, you might need to book a flight to Poland to try and persuade Carlex Design to build the EXY 6x6. Yes, 6x6 as in six wheels, with a third axle slung under the cargo bed for an entirely new look. It’s strictly a concept for the time being, but serious off-road tyres, huge ground clearance and a front winch suggest it would be practically unstoppable.
You’d think 415bhp would require a big-capacity engine. So how will the A45 S achieve it with just 2 litres?
