Looking back at four decades of BMW’S biggest success. Hard to believe that the BMW 3 Series is 40 years old. It’s also hard to imagine a time when the phrase “3 Series” meant nothing. To actually exist in such an era, you’d need to go back to 1974 in your hastily constructed time machine and enjoy watching Nixon squirm through impeachment in the wake of Watergate.
BMW has become highly cost-conscious, as profits slide at the same time as investment in EV production ramps up, so it’s drawn up a hit list of less-profitable models that won’t be replaced. They include the standard-wheelbase 7-series, the Z4, the 2-series Gran Tourer and cabrio and the 3-series GT. The ungainly 6-series GT looks a good bet to survive because Norbert Reithofer, chairman of BMW’s supervisory board, is a fan. Since Reithofer was replaced as chairman of the board of management in 2015 by Harald Krüger, shares have dropped from 122 to 65 euros. Nobody’s blaming Krüger for the state of the economy, or for the sabre-rattling between the US and China that’s prompting some new-factory building. But it is raising questions about whether his contract will be extended when it expires next year – and who’d replace him.
Official details of the new 2019 BMW 330e G20 plug-in hybrid have emerged. The electrified saloon is claimed to be 30% faster and 10% more efficient than its predecessor and have 50% more electric range. The 330e will go on sale in July next year (USA 2019).
Regardless of your personal politics, as the threat of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit looks increasingly possible the need to make contingency plans is being felt in all sectors of the economy. The automotive industry is perhaps one of the most deeply affected by a possible no-deal scenario and various high-profile announcements have already been made by the bigger players: after 107 years, Ford is threatening to review its entire presence in the UK, while Nissan has delayed pay talks and BMW is resigned to a month’s closure of the Cowley MINI plant following the UK’s departure from the EU, all in the interests of maintaining its supply chain.
BMW UK recently celebrated a significant milestone for the all-electric i3, as the 10,000th‑model has just been sold. Launched in 2013, the i3 has evolved to become the best-selling compact electric vehicle in the premium segment. What's more, with the recent updates to the i3, and the addition of a new, sportier i3S, success is set to continue.
History by Paul Beard. Paul Beard tells the story of the BMW 1602 Electric – 1969 Fifty-two years ago, at the Geneva Motor Show of March 1966, BMW launched the 1602 model. Here, we explore the electric version of this stylish saloon, which became the springboard for the company’s involvement with electric cars that culminated with the i3, launched in 2013.

The Day Hell Froze. Over All the action at this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours including monumental hail storms. This year’s N24 was notable for being the M6 GT3’s debut race, but it will always be remembered as the year when the Green Hell turned into an ice rink. Words: Bob Harper. Front-wheel drive 1 Series… but only for China. It might look like a booted 1 Series but BMW’s 1 Series Sedan that will be sold exclusively in China actually utilises the front-wheel drive UKL platform as seen on machinery such as the 2 Series Active Tourer, the new X1, and, of course, the MINI.
BMW 4-Series face-lift announced. Since its debut in June 2013 when the 4 Series took over the mantle from the 3 Series Coupé BMW has sold an impressive 400,000 examples of the Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé with the USA being the model’s largest market, accounting for almost a third of all sales. Surprisingly the UK is ahead of Germany in terms of sales figures and is the 4 Series’ second largest market and it’s also perhaps something of a surprise to note that worldwide the 4 Series Gran Coupé accounts for 50 percent of all sales with the Coupé and Convertible both garnering 25 percent.
Hot on the heels of the new 5 Series Saloon comes its Touring sibling and from these first images it looks like BMW has another winner on its hands as the five-door looks even better than its four-door stable mate. The UK model line up will feature two petrol and two diesel engines and like its Saloon counterpart two trim levels will be offered – SE and M Sport. Kicking off the range is the 520d SE with an on-the-road price of £38,385 and it will be powered by the familiar 190hp four-cylinder diesel. Performance stats are a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds and economy and emissions figures of 65.6mpg and 114g/km respectively but unlike the Saloon there will be no 520d EfficientDynamics or xDrive models at the start of production. The second diesel model is the 530d and this will be offered in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive guises in both SE and M Sport trim. It develops 265hp and has 0-62mph times of 5.8 seconds (RWD) and 5.6 seconds (xDrive) with economy ranging from 56.4 for the rear-drive and 51.3 for the four-wheel drive versions. 530d prices start at £46,235 for the RWD SE and rise to £51,535 for a M Sport xDrive.
Its arrival has been a poorly kept secret but here it is in all its glory, the CS version of the M4. In the UK we’ve had the CS nomenclature used in the past (most recently on the E46 M3 CS) but this badging will now feature on a range of M cars that will sit in between the halo GTS models and the normal or Competition spec machinery.
High-speed luxury The UK-spec ALPINA B7 Bi-Turbo will only be available with rear-wheel drive, will accelerate to 60mph in 4secs and be capable of 205mph.
This issue goes to press on the eve of this year's endurance race at Le Mans, at which BMW will be opening a new chapter in the brand's fascinating sports car history.

AS WE HAVE previously predicted, BMW’s bestselling boxer-engined GS models will get their biggest overhaul in years for 2019, with a new, larger engine. Now we have gained a sneak look at detailed specifications of what will be called the R1250GS and R1250GS Adventure. We’ve already published spy shots of the new engine, fitted to a R1250RT tourer, but now more specific details have emerged.

BMW says that its new 330e plug-in hybrid saloon represents something of a revolution, offering more efficiency, an increased electric-only range and the opportunity to take advantage of more power, with standard-fit performance-boosting technology. Due to be launched next summer, the on-paper credentials of the new model certainly look impressive. It will be 30% faster than its predecessor, deliver a 50% increase in electric-only range and boast a 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions.
