BMW M3 Track Project E92 Part IX

BMW M3 Track Project E92 Part IX

Making assumptions is something you learn the hard way… like assuming dropping a load of weight out of the car and adding more downforce should make the car better, right?

BMW M3 Track Project E92 Part VIII

BMW M3 Track Project E92 Part VIII

After the last outing at the ’Ring I knew something had to be done about the suspension and the way the car handles. Part of the reason for this is because the huge GT2 rear wing upsets the car’s balance – the amount of downforce it creates even at the flattest angle of attack is creating understeer on the front end at high speed. The only way to tackle this was to stiffen up the rear but seeing as it is already mega stiff on the springs, this would make the rear even more of a handful on track. Luckily the amount of downforce it creates counteracts the problem in the high speed stuff and makes it very stable but, as said, it then upsets the front…

BMW M3 Track Project E92 Part VII

BMW M3 Track Project E92 Part VII

Typically as I’m about to write about a poor start to the summer there’s blazing sunshine coming through the window, but on the whole it’s been such a damp and soggy start to the summer that I’ve been wondering if I shouldn’t have built an ark rather than a race car.

BMW M3 E92 Track Project Part VI

BMW M3 E92 Track Project Part VI

With my next track day fast approaching we still had a good few jobs to do on the M3 and one of the most daunting was changing the bottom end shells. Although Dave and I had done a few E46 M3s before, we had never tackled an S65 engine. The reason for this preventative maintenance was that worryingly there is quite a large list of cars on the American forums that have suffered with bearing failure and I even know of a German car that spun a shell at less than 40,000 kilometres.

BMW E92 M3 Track Project Part V

BMW E92 M3 Track Project Part V

LONGTERMERS E92 M3 Track Project. Looking back at the car last month, I couldn’t see what others were pointing out – people who knew the car before and had now seen it in the workshop were shocked and couldn’t believe what I had done to a perfectly good car. But perfect in who’s eyes? To me the car was flawed with the weight BMW was asking it to carry around and so it was far from perfect from my point of view! As I said, looking back at the photos of the unpainted cage with the carbon panels on, it did look in a state and the different colours weren’t helping the cause as far as the aesthetic police were concerned.

BMW E92 M3 Track Project Part IV

BMW E92 M3 Track Project Part IV

At the ‘Ring at the end of last year my friend Ravi was hot on my heels driving the VLN E46 M3 race car fitted with slicks and my E92 just couldn’t match his speed in the tight sections. On these parts of the track my car tended to understeer – sometimes dangerously – but most of the time I just had to brake earlier and wait to get back on the throttle. Aside from the sticky slicks, the extra 250+kg my car was carrying didn’t help the cause – there is only so much the wide 285 section Cups can take…

The BMW E93 M3 Track Project FIA T45 multi-point cage

Back in 2013 when I was looking for a car, I originally wanted something that I could drive to the track and then drive home without the worry of a trailer. The problem is a road car will not perform like a race car and I wanted my road car to perform like a race car.

BMW E92 M3 Coupe Track Project Part III

BMW E92 M3 Coupe Track Project Part III

BMW E92 M3 Coupe Track Project. In my last report I was pleased with both myself and the car after the track day at Spa. As my confidence was growing in the car I was getting to the point where I could begin to pick out some setup flaws in the chassis. There was still a feeling of lightness on the faster sections and the rear of the car didn’t feel as planted as the CSL mentioned in previous reports.

BMW E92 M3 track project - German track day

BMW E92 M3 track project - German track day

Whilst killing some time at the office I was surfing the internet and found a German track day company called pistenclub.de which holds around 200 track days a year all over Europe from Austria to Zandvoort in Holland. Browsing through the list of track days I noticed a two-day special at Spa Francorchamps and the one that interested me – the Nürburgring.

Longtermers BMW M3 E92 Track Project

I was so eager to get to the Nürburgring with my newly setup car that I booked the first available track day at the ‘Ring for 2015. The track time was organised by a British company called Destination Nurburgring, or Ring Weekenders, and it is also sometimes affiliated with Circuit Days. The organiser is Darren. He’s a top bloke and his events are always run well.
