BMW N47 engine warning

BMW N47 engine warning

The N47 has now been in production for 11 years, and I include the B47 from 2015 in with this unit as, really, it’s much about the same. If, however, you’re in need of a used engine to replace yours, you need to be aware that the N47 D20A and D20C do not interchange.

Late BMW 3-Series E90 LCI or early F30/F31 3-Series?

Late BMW 3-Series E90 LCI or early F30/F31 3-Series?

I was surprised to see that F30s are now down to under £6,000 on AutoTrader. co.uk, and I’ve been told that £4,500 will buy an early one in the auctions, albeit with a few miles on the clock (a 12-plate, solid black 318d with 150,000 miles and basic SE trim on 16in wheels but, even so, a nice enough thing if it all checks out). But is an early F30 a better bet than a late E90? There’s no doubt that in the last three years of the E90 (the LCI version), BMW really improved this model. The early ones, with the spartan interior, that weird-looking grille and some truly ghastly colours (what was that light metallic blue-green-grey called?), are just about in banger territory, now with a few hovering around the £1,000 mark.

That DIY spirit

That DIY spirit

Remember the days when your dad changed the gearbox on your mum’s BL Mini in a weekend, pausing only for a cup of tea, cheese sandwich and ten minutes of World of Sport? I certainly can, just like I can recall my very petite and middle class mum underneath our three-year old Escort Mexico holding the gearbox up whilst Everett Snr got the top two bellhousing bolts in.

Classic car values… again!

Classic car values… again!

The classic car market is in full silly season, with mind-boggling prices being paid for some extraordinary and also very ordinary cars. Now, six figure sums for an M1 (the proper original one) can be justified because at the time, it was an absolutely tremendous thing – it combined the style, performance and agility of cars such as the 308GTB and the Bora… but it actually worked and wasn’t tragic on fuel. Grossly undervalued for so long it’s finally found its mark.

Trailblazer – The first Audi A3 8L - Andrew Everett takes a close look at the first series of A3s.

Although it’s not quite time to pop open the champagne corks, we tend to forget that it is 18 years since the first A3 went on sale. Launched in the UK in September 1996, it went toe to toe with not only the 1994 BMW 3 Series Compact, but also the VW Golf which, in 1996, was still in its Mk 3 guise. While the two cars might have looked broadly similar underneath, however, the A3 was in fact based on the new PQ34 platform which would underpin the Mk 4 Golf, due to be launched in 1998. Styled by Dirk van Braeckel (currently chief designer at Bentley), the A3 was another ‘just right’ car from Audi. Van Braeckel had also styled the original A8 concept car that entered production almost unaltered.

Top three £20,000 BMW Coupés

Top three £20,000 BMW Coupés

It doesn’t seem that long ago that manufacturers were shying away from making coupés. The two-door format was dead according to many pundits – but how times have changed. 2016 buyers who lust after a potent BMW Coupé have never had so much choice and the range of exciting options extends to the used market too – with a healthy £20,000 budget bagging some serious machinery. You won’t regret buying any one of these three classy contenders…
