Extra Competition. The new 2019 BMW M2 Competition F87 represents a complete reworking of a vehicle that, in its original form, was already a class-leading sports car. A new engine brings a substantial power increase, while changes to the steering, braking system, exhaust and suspension are all wrapped in a revised exterior design that’s been enhanced for aerodynamic efficiency.
The new model will now accelerate to 62mph in 4.2 seconds with M DCT transmission (4.4 with manual gearbox) and, if the optional, competition-focused M Driver’s Package is specified, on to a maximum of 170mph.
Visually, the M2 Competition F87 is distinguished by a new front spoiler design and kidney grille finished in high-gloss Shadow Line black, side gills on the front wings and redesigned quad tailpipes. There’s also a dark, M Competition badge on the rear end plus, race-inspired double-arm door mirrors. Under the surface a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) high-precision strut from the BMW M3/M4 F80/F82 has been added in the engine compartment, to improve front-end rigidity and increase steering precision.
The twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder engine produces a peak power output of 410hp between 5,250 and 7,000rpm, and combines that with an impressive 406lb ft of torque between 2,350 and 5,200rpm.
In addition, fuel economy is reasonable, with the engine capable of returning 28.5mpg on the combined cycle when paired with the six-speed manual (CO2 225g/km), or 30.7mpg with the optional M DCT auto transmission (CO2 209g/km). Extra eff ort has been put into keeping the new engine cool, and the car features an enlarged BMW kidney and a new front skirt to guide as much air in as possible. The car also makes use of the race-tested cooling system from the BMW M4 Competition Package, consisting of one central radiator, two side radiators and an additional engine oil cooler. Cars fitted with the seven-speed M DCT transmission also get a transmission oil cooler.
At the other end, the M2 Competition also features a completely new exhaust system. Its dual-branch design has a new silencer and there are electronically-controlled flaps to ensure a distinctive sound delivery.
The BMW M2 Competition is available to order from mid-May with prices starting from £49,285.
