20 years of the Audi TT

Audi marks 20 years of the TT Hard as it may be to believe, it’s now 20 years since the sporty Audi TT was unveiled, with its status as a modern classic surely cemented. To celebrate, Audi has had updated the third generation model and launched a commemorative special edition called the ‘TT 20 years,’ which is limited to just 999 examples worldwide.

The first generation TT, internally designated Type 8N, was launched in the autumn of 1998 as a coupé, with a roadster following early the following year. Early models received plenty of press coverage following a series of high-speed accidents, which occurred during abrupt lane changes or sharp turns. Both the coupé and roadster variants were recalled in late 1999/early 2000 to improve the predictability of the car’s handling at high speeds, with the TT overcoming this early setback to become a resounding success. The car is now on its third generation, but the DNA from the first model is still instantly recognisable.

The TT 20 years edition will be available in coupe and roadster body styles with either Arrow Grey or Nano Grey paint finishes. The moccasin brown Nappa Leather interior is said to hark back to the early cars with their ‘Baseball Leather’ upholstery, while ‘TT 20 years’ badges on the steering wheel and gear knob help to further distinguish the new model.
